Mandy McKinnon has a motto: “People don’t plan to fail; they fail to plan.” That’s why she’s quick to say that she sees herself in a position of leadership in the future. Born in Edmonton, and raised by a handy father, who she describes as a ‘tinkerer’, Mandy likes the feeling of having something to show for her hard work at the end of the day. She’s tried office jobs, but working on a construction site feels like a much better fit, and she’s getting extensive practical experience in Juniper West at the TRU training house (aka the YMCA/YWCA Dream Home) as part of her trades education with instructor Hank Bangma. Each year, the School of Trades and Technology builds a home from the ground up as a training exercise. “First year residential construction, electrical, and plumbing program students from the School of Trades and Technology get hands-on building experience…”.

For Mandy, it’s an important step on her way to a career full of opportunities.  If you think carpentry might suit your interests and goals, check out our program description here: http://www.tru.ca/trades/foundation/carpentry.html
